In the 1870’s the company was designing and producing original high-quality furniture inspired by the aesthetic qualities of E.W. Godwin’s architecture. The furniture was sold in-store and also featured in the James Shoolbred & Co catalogue which was circulated outside of London. Within another decade the company expanded and moved into a larger location in London becoming one of the first department stores. James Shoolbred furniture was always displayed and photographed alongside the textiles carpets and lamps that the company also sold creating an example interior design for customers to view.
