Primitive 18TH Century Welsh Stick Chair.

£4,500.00

A rare 18th Century Welsh stick chair. This wonderful early 18th century chair is made from a thick slab of what we think is painted sycamore wood standing on three tampered oak legs with a curved elm arm rails and spindles. The colour and patina on this chair is quite out standing, the shape of the chair with its unusual leg angles and warped arm rail which has formed from age and use, remarkable piece of Welsh folk art.

The chair is from South Wales circa 1740 and recently discovered in the Swansea area, Welsh stick chairs of this age where made in the vernacular fashion IE made by local crafts men or farmers, they would use which ever materials were easy to find in the rural area. this chair has only three legs to be more stable on uneven flagstone floors in Welsh farms or taverns.

Condition : the chair is sturdy and strong and very usable, there are a few historic repairs to one of the legs and a split on the seat but overall in amazing condition for its age.

Seat height 40cm

Provenance : recently acquired from a farm in the Swansea Vally of South Wales.
